HANABI TAIKAI

Production of fireworks was introduced to Japan from China where gunpowder was first used in history. The Japanese liked hanabi and it became one of the most important outdoor events in the lives of the people of Edo (Tokyo). The ambition of every maker of fireworks was and still is to win awards at the annual display in July, at Tokyo, on the River Sumida.

Hanabi Taikai at the River Sumida, though the event is most famous, it is very difficult for visitors to see because of high rise buildings alongside the river and too many viewers.

Recommended places of Hanabi Taikai in Tokyo are Adachi's Hanabi Taikai on July 23 at the Arakawa River near Kita Senju, Edogawa-ku Hanabi Taikai on Aug. 6 near Shinozaki at the Edogawa River and Katsushika Hanabi Taikai on July 26 at the Edogawa River near Shibamata.
