OIRAN DOCHU AT OKU-ASAKUSA
| Oiran Dochu (Reenacted parade of oiran courtesans in Edo Era) at Oku-Asakusa Komatsubashi Dori Street Yoshiwara area of Taito-ku April 13 (Sat) in 2019 at 1 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. If bad weather, the event will be put off to April 14 the same time Yoshiwara (now part of the Senzoku, Taito-ku) was from the early years of the Edo period (1600-1868) until 1958 (prostition banned in Japan), the location of the most famous government licensed quarter of prostitutions in Japan. It was not a simple collection of brothels, rather a highly sophisticated level of entertainment was offered here. New genres of music, art and literature developed around this place played a great role in the cultural history of Edo period. Oiran, a high-class courtesans were expected to have a high level of culture to associate with customers of high ranking personnels in the society and wealthy merchants of Edo.
