| Meiji Jingu Shrine Inner Garden (Gyoen) Hanashobu (Iris) Garden and Water
Lily Pond Hanashobu at the Meiji Gyoen Garden 80-90% blooming as of June 13, 2018. The shrine is dedicated to the momory of the Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shoken. The shrine was built on November 1, 1920 after Emperor Meiji passed away in 1912 and his wife in 1914. Nov. 3 is the birthday of Emperor Meiji. The inner Garden is the only part that had existed long before the foundation of Meiji Jingu. In the early Edo Period (1603-1867), this area was the garden of Lord Kato of Kumamoto. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the area became the property of the Imperial Family and was named Yoyogi Gyoen. Emperor Meiji expressed great pleasure at this tranquil garden and composed a Waka poetry in its honor: Utsusemino Yoyogi no sato wa Shinzukanite Miyako no hokano Kokochi koso sure.
