ZENYOJI YOOGO CHRYSANTHEMUM TAIKAI ND GIANT PINE TREE

Yoogo Kikka Taikai (Chrysanthemum Exhibition) is held at Zenyoji Temple of Buzan sect of Shingon Buddhism in Koiwa in November. (Oct. 17-Nov. 23) The temple was founded in 1527. Yoogo meaning "descending god."
A large miniature landscape created by chrysanthemum flowers is modeling famous "Fall of Nachi" in Wakayama Prefecture. Theme changes every year.

GIANT PINE TREE

Zenyoji Temple is known for its giant pine tree called "Yoogo no Matsu" (god descended pine tree) which is estimated to be 600 years old. The tree was designated as the natural monument of Tokyo in 1926 and natural monument of Japan in 2011. The giant pine tree is 8 meters high and branches extend horizontally about 30 meters in diameter. The tree vied its largeness with "Okano Matsu" at Shinkakuji Temple in Sanuki, Kagawa Prefecture but the "Okano Matsu" died in 1993.
